*The Place Names of Svalbard*<\/strong> is the Norwegian Polar Institute\u2019s authoritative reference work on place names in Svalbard. The book is written in English<\/strong> and is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in Svalbard\u2019s geography, history, and cultural heritage. <\/p>\n

The first edition was published as early as 1942<\/strong>, and the work has since served as the standard reference for the names of mountains, glaciers, fjords, islands, headlands, and other geographical features in the archipelago. These place names tell the story of centuries of hunting, research, mapping, and expeditions in the Arctic, and offer a fascinating insight into human activity on Svalbard. <\/p>\n
