Description
IAMSAR Manual Volume II (Mission Coordination) is an official publication developed by the International Maritime Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization, providing guidelines for the coordination of search and rescue (SAR) operations. The manual is a core component of the international IAMSAR system and is used by rescue coordination centers and authorities managing SAR operations.
The publication describes how rescue operations are planned, organized, and managed. It provides guidance for work in maritime rescue coordination centres (MRCCs), including search planning, coordination of available resources, and cooperation between maritime and aeronautical rescue units.
IAMSAR Manual Volume II serves as an operational reference for SAR coordinators. The manual contains procedures for handling emergencies, planning search patterns, communication between involved units, and coordinating rescue resources during complex operations.
The 2025 edition reflects updates and recommendations adopted by the IMO and ICAO to ensure effective international coordination of rescue operations. The manual is used by rescue coordination centers, coast guards, maritime authorities, and SAR organizations worldwide.
IAMSAR manuals are normally updated every three years to reflect developments in international search and rescue procedures and experience from operational SAR services.
The IAMSAR series consists of Volume I (Organization and Management), Volume II (Mission Coordination), and Volume III (Mobile Facilities), as well as IAMSAR Action Cards.
