Description
This is a specialized reference work of tables for astronavigation, originally developed for air navigators, but also widely used by sailors and navigators at sea. The book consists of comprehensive tables providing altitude and azimuth data for celestial bodies over a wide range of latitudes (39°-89°) and for declinations from 0°-29°. These tables are used to reduce astronomical observations – that is, to convert observations of the sun, moon, planets and stars to positions on the earth’s surface using sextant and sea almanac.
It is published as part of Pub. No. 249 (and corresponding UK publication AP 3270/NP 303) and is a permanent tabular volume covering most latitudes in northern areas. Volume 3 complements Volume 2 (0°-40°) and together they cover higher latitudes.
