This volume is Volume 1 in the Pub. No. 249 series and contains sight reduction tables for selected stars, intended for use in astronavigation. The book is designed for air navigation, but is also widely used by sailors and navigators at sea practicing classical celestial navigation with a sextant.
Volume 1 differs from Volumes 2 and 3 in that it focuses specifically on stellar observations and contains pre-calculated tables for a selection of navigational stars. The tables make it possible to quickly calculate the altitude and azimuth of stars, based on the observer’s assumed position and nautical almanac data.
This edition is labeled Epoch 2020 and is valid for several years (good through 2024), as star positions change slowly over time. Often used in conjunction with Volumes 2 and 3 for complete coverage of solar, planetary and stellar navigation, this book is a key tool for sailors seeking an electronics-independent method of positioning.
