Description
Condition Assessment Scheme (CAS), 2005 Edition is the official IMO publication containing the regulations for the Condition Assessment Scheme (CAS). The scheme was developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a supplement to the ordinary class surveys for certain categories of oil tankers.
The purpose of CAS is to provide a more comprehensive and transparent assessment of the vessel’s structural condition than is normally achieved through standard inspection programs. The scheme was established to improve safety and contribute to better documentation of the technical condition of older tankers.
The publication describes requirements for planning and conducting inspections, document review, thickness measurements, close-up inspections and assessment of structural components. The regulations also include requirements for reporting, technical documentation and the role of classification societies in the assessment process.
The Condition Assessment Scheme is used by shipping companies, classification societies, ship inspectors and maritime authorities working with technical inspection and certification of tankers. The publication provides a structured framework for identifying corrosion, wear and tear and other conditions that can affect vessel safety and service life.
CAS is based on principles from the Enhanced Survey Programme (ESP) and places particular emphasis on documentation of the vessel’s actual technical condition through thorough investigations and analyses. The regulations contribute to increased trust between authorities, flag states, classification societies and operators in international shipping.
The 2005 edition serves as a technical reference for companies working with vessel inspections, maintenance programs and maritime safety compliance. The publication is particularly relevant for professionals working with tankers and structural assessments of vessels.
