“Going with the Floe ” tells the fascinating story of how the research vessel Lance—the Norwegian Polar Institute’s research vessel at the time—deliberately allowed itself to become frozen into the pack ice north of Svalbard in order to study one of the world’s most rapidly changing climate regions.

During the N-ICE2015 expedition, the opposite happened—the researchers actually wanted to drift with the ice. At approximately 83° north, the Lance served as a floating research station while an international team of scientists studied sea ice, ocean currents, the atmosphere, snow, ecosystems, and climate change in the Arctic Ocean.
