What is a sextant used for?
A sextant is a classic navigational instrument used to measure the angle between a celestial body and the horizon. With the help of nautical almanacs and navigation tables, latitude and longitude can be calculated without the use of electronic aids.
Astronomical navigation is still used by many long-distance sailors as a backup to GPS, and is also an important part of teaching classical navigation.
Whole Horizon or Split Horizon?
Hexagons are usually supplied with two types of horizon mirrors.
The Whole Horizon Mirror makes it easier to see the horizon and is often used by beginners and courses.
Split Horizon Mirror is the traditional solution where the horizon is seen directly through the mirror and is preferred by many experienced navigators.
