IMO Model Course 1.44 – Safety Training for Personnel, 2018 Edition is the official IMO publication for the safety training of personnel working on board vessels using gas or other low flashpoint fuels. The publication has been developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to support the training requirements of the STCW Convention and the IGF Code.
The use of LNG and other alternative fuels has increased significantly in international shipping in recent years. This places new demands on the competence and safety understanding of the crew. IMO Model Course 1.44 has been developed to ensure that personnel have the necessary knowledge of the risks associated with such fuels and how to handle them safely.
The publication provides guidance on the properties of low-flashpoint fuels, safe operation of fuel systems, risk assessment, fire and explosion prevention, emergency procedures and personal safety on board. The manual also describes how the crew should handle potential incidents related to leaks, gas detection and other safety-critical situations.
The IMO Model Course 1.44 is used by maritime educational institutions, training centers, shipping companies and seafarers working on vessels covered by the IGF Code. The publication is particularly relevant for crews who will obtain basic certification for work on vessels using LNG or other alternative fuels.
