Description
About the book. Lift-the-Flap Atlas opens up the world through colourful maps, detailed drawings and more than 100 flaps. Lonely Planet Kids takes young readers from continent to continent with facts about animals, culture and famous places. The book is written by Kate Baker and illustrated by Liz Kay.
Content. The journey goes from arctic landscapes and North America to South America’s rainforest, onward through Europe, Africa and Asia to Oceania and Antarctica. Along the way, children encounter Norwegian troll tales, Tutankhamun’s tomb, the Taj Mahal and the ocean’s coral reefs, among other things. Wildlife, nature and stories sit side by side in the illustrated spreads. The flaps let the reader open small sections with extra information.
Who is this book suitable for? Suitable for children curious about where places are located, and adults who want an atlas to browse together with a child. The book can be used to find familiar animals and buildings, or as a starting point for exploring an entire continent. The English text is supplemented by many clear images, so reading time can also build on what the child points out on the maps.
Read together and discover more. Read together with an adult who can help with English words, and let the child share what they notice in the pictures. Choose one topic at a time and allow room for questions, small pauses and the child’s own associations along the way. Return to a spread that sparks interest; new details may appear on closer inspection. Connect what you read to things the child has seen at home, on a trip or at a museum. The book can be used as a starting point for conversations in Norwegian, even though the text and captions are in English. Let the child’s interest and reading experience set the pace, and alternate between reading aloud and exploring the illustrations together. It is easy to share a discovery when several people can look at the same spread and point out what they notice. Such a reading session can continue with finding another book or map to explore a question further.
