Description
Day walks in an open and quieter part of England.
The North Pennines offer broad fells, river valleys, and small settlements bearing traces of a long working history. Walking in the North Pennines provides a wide selection of walks through parts of Cumbria, County Durham, and Northumberland. You can choose between gentle stretches and longer days out on the open upland landscape.
50 routes with OS maps.
Most of the walks are circular routes of roughly five to fourteen miles. The terrain ranges from riverside paths and old railway lines to rougher fell country. Ordnance Survey maps at 1:50,000 support the route descriptions, making it easier to assess terrain and route choices before picking the day’s destination.
Geology, history, and useful bases.
The Vale of Eden, bedrock such as the Whin Sill, and traces of mining give the walks several points of interest. Hexham, Barnard Castle, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, and Brampton are among the possible starting points. The book makes it possible to plan several days in the area and choose walks that show different sides of the landscape and local communities.
Who is this guide suitable for?
The guide is suitable for experienced walkers who want variety in day length and terrain. The selection of routes involves no major technical challenges, but sound navigation is important on the fells when the weather changes. The area can be visited year-round and is known for wind and rough conditions. Equipment, day length, and route choice should be adapted to the season.
A long tradition of walking guides.
Cicerone has published guidebooks since 1969. The publisher grew out of a community of climbers and mountain people who wanted to share detailed knowledge of their routes – a tradition that still shapes these compact books on walking, trekking, and other outdoor experiences.
