One small Lake District guide.
The start of a much longer journey.
The story behind the books
Born from a love of the outdoors.
Shaped by experience.
The story begins in England’s Lake District. Climbers Walt Unsworth and Brian Evans wanted better guidebooks, so they decided to make their own. Their first book, covering the Northern Lake District, appeared in 1969: 40 pages with hand-drawn illustrations, printed on a small press in Brian’s garage.
From those modest beginnings grew a specialist outdoor publisher with readers far beyond Britain. Jonathan and Lesley Williams took over in 1999, and in 2023 leadership passed to the next generation of the family.
Today, Cicerone is based in Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District. Its roots are British, but its trails reach much further: to the Alps, Scandinavia, the Himalaya and wherever the path invites you to explore.

A specialist in your backpack
Closer to the trail.
Ready for the journey.
A single trail, mountain region or outdoor activity often gets a whole Cicerone book to itself. That leaves room for the practical detail you need to plan your trip with confidence.
